A lot of people are no longer conscious about our history. At school we learn about the most important events in the past, but our own region is less mentionned. However a lot of things happened in Oost- and Westmalle in the past! The whole ‘Kempen’ region was scene of a series of historical moments.
Our region was occupied and looted every century. Foreign troops not only brought death and misery but also diseases like the black plague. The two old castles in Westmalle and Oostmalle witnessed some radical conflicts which created the present Europe.
Because our own local history is often forgotten, a group of enthousiastic people formed the non-profit organization ‘Mallifique’ in 2007. This association has as goal to represent cultural and historical events. They keep the search ‘where do we come from?’ alive: how lived our ancestors, what happened with them, what happened in our villages, are the legends and tales based on true stories,...?
The next spectacle in the future is the historical evocation ‘Mallifique 2009’ on september 4th,5th and 6th 2009. We hope to improve the historical consciousness of locals with this and other events to come.
